Donner Lake is bordered on the east by the Donner Memorial State park, Interstate 80 to the north and Donner Summit to the west. Donner Lake offers a breathtaking alpine setting with fantastic summer recreation. There are many public docks on the lake’s north shore for use, which make a perfect place to picnic, fish, or just relax in the sun. The Truckee Donner Park & Recreation maintain the Public Beach on the lake’s west shore. Locals refer to this as “West End Beach”. This is the location of the annual 4th of July extravaganza where locals show up before dawn to stake their claim on the beach. The day is filled with water balloon fights, egg toss contests, three legged hops, live bands and lots of food. A grand fireworks show after sunset brings a perfect day to a close.
